Every scenario may be different, but there are a list of common distadvantages with using Voice over IP technology:

Power outages

Because your relies on electricity, you may not be able to use the service during a power outage. Check with your service provider to see if they have any solutions.

Possible solution: Backup UPS power supply.

9-1-1

Many VoIP service providers are connected directly to 911 emergency services.

E911 is the ability to provide caller identification and location information to a national call center

  • If you service provider has the means, make sure you enter the most accurate information about your location when signing up for VoIP service.
  • Understand how you can update your contact information with your provider should you decide to move or travel. 
  • Understand what you can and cannot do with VoIP 911 service.
  • Visit the FCC VoIP Consumer Facts website for more information.

411 Directory Assistance

Having a new VoIP phone number does not guarantee that you will automatically be included in the local or national yellow or white pages. Many VoIP service providers currently may not have 411 directory service available.
